Introduction

On September 22, 2016, Adani Green Energy opened the world's largest single location solar power plant in Kamuthi village in Ramanathapuram district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The 648MW 1 power plant with an outlay of $680 million was completed in less than a year. This was a significant achievement, considering that the largest solar project in the world at a single location till then was in California, US, and it had taken 3 years to complete (Refer Exhibit I for important solar power installations around the world). Gautam Adani, the company's chairman, said the Tamil Nadu plant "reinstates the country's ambitions of becoming one of the leading green energy producers in the world". The Government of India had a vision 2 to set up 100 Gigawatts (GW) 3 of solar capacity in the country by 2022. The 648 MW project was a big leap toward achieving India's Vision 2022.

Adani Green Energy was a part of the Adani Group (Adani) of companies. Established in 1996, , Adani was a $10 billion diversified group in 2016 with interests in power, transmission, distribution, and logistics. It entered the solar power business in 2014 and had around 2GW of solar assets. This made it one of the top players in the Indian solar energy market, which had recently witnessed a boom owing to the bottoming of solar hardware prices and the government's ambitious plans. In 2011, Adani had installed the largest solar power plant in Gujarat, India. The 40MW plant was completed in a record time of 165 days.
